Important information: The Diploma in Innovation Management has been revised for students commencing in 2013.

The Diploma in Innovation Management (3461) is a unique interdisciplinary undergraduate program administered through the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) in the School of Management, ASB. The program aims to encourage an entrepreneurial mind-set and provide students with the knowledge and skills needed for developing business opportunities and commercial innovation.

Course material covers areas such as creativity in enterprises, business principles, business planning for new ventures, funding, management and commercialisation of intellectual property, and valuation and assessment of innovative businesses. Students engage in exercises to set up and run their own new ventures and participate in case studies with Australian and international entrepreneurs. The lectures, workshops, case studies and tutorials in each of the program's courses are delivered by a well-balanced mixture of university academics and expert industry and government professionals.

Undergraduate Students
This program is open to UNSW undergraduate students of all faculties who have completed 36 UOC and have a minimum WAM of 65, or higher if required by the student’s primary program authority. Students are assessed for admission based on their past leadership and entrepreneurial activities, enthusiasm and academic achievement.

The Diploma in Innovation Management is designed to provide an entrepreneurial education that will allow students to recognise, evaluate, finance and exploit innovative commercial opportunities. Graduates are more competitive for all employment opportunities regardless of industry, and will have a wider range of career options. Combinations of business and innovation skills are required in careers that involve intellectual property, high technology finance, venture capital and investment, R&D and innovation management, government regulation and administration, and sales and marketing.

The Diploma is taught concurrently over the student's years of study and involves 48 units of credit (UOC). Upon completion of core, elective and capstone courses, students become eligible for the award of the Diploma in Innovation Management.

More electives are available on a case-by-case basis providing approval is given by program authorities.

All courses in List B may not be available to all students. For example GENC courses may not be undertaken by students completing an ASB program; GENL courses and GENC7002 are not available to students completing a LAW program. Other exclusions may apply. Students should check with their degree program authority for possible exclusions.

1. The program requires completion of 48UOC.

2. Students must have a WAM of no less than 65 to be considered for enrolment in the Diploma, with the exact WAM determined by the primary program authority.

3. Students can enrol in the Diploma concurrently with their primary undergraduate degree program ONLY with the approval of their primary program authority.

4. Students will only be able to overload courses with the approval of their primary program authority, and according to the rules of their primary program authority.

5. Students are required to complete 5 Core courses (2 Core courses of 3 UOC each and 3 Core courses of 6 UOC each). Students must choose one of the courses in List A to count towards the Core course requirement.

6. Students are required to complete 12 UOC of Electives from List B.

7. Students are required to complete 2 Capstone courses. Students must choose one course from List C to count towards to the Capstone requirement.

8. Students may count up to 12 UOC of courses from their primary degree program towards the Diploma program.

9. INOV2210 is a pre-requisite for INOV2110.

10. Completion of all Core and Elective courses is a pre-requisite for the Capstone courses.

Other Information

1. Most students will normally be able to enrol in the Dip InnovMan after the completion of their first year if they are in good standing. Offers will be conditional until students are confirmed as being in good standing.

2. Students enrolled in any Law program must have completed their third year and be in good standing. Offers will be conditional until students are confirmed as being in good standing.

3. Students enrolled in any COFA program are required to have a WAM of 75 to be considered for enrolment in the DipInnovMan.

4. Students in any Engineering program must confirm with their School office whether or not their WAM qualifies them for the DipInnovMan.

5. Local students who wish to complete the Dip InnovMan after completion of their primary undergraduate degree program will need to apply for admission and enrol in the Dip InnovMan before they complete their primary degree. This option is not available to International students due to Visa restrictions.

6. International students must complete the Dip InnovMan within the same overall time period as their primary undergraduate degree program.

7. INOV classes are NOT available for enrolment on myUNSW. Interest in INOV classes will be solicited by email and enrolment completed manually by the lecturer and/or CIE personnel.
