The Bachelor of Commerce (BCom International), which includes a one year international exchange component, is a highly valued business qualification. The program is designed for students who want to complement their business degree with international studies (including asian studies, european studies or languages), and also for those students who want to align their degree with their interests and careers ambitions in accounting, finance, human resource management, marketing or information systems.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

On successful completion of the BCom (International), students will have the ability to:
  • demonstrate business knowledge and apply that knowledge in business problems
  • demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • present complex issues in coherent written statements and oral presentations
  • demonstrate understanding of disciplinary issues in a local or global context
  • demonstrate understanding of the principles of working collaboratively in teams

  • understand international and intercultural issues and their impact on business behaviours and practice

Program Structure

Students should always follow the program requirements according to the year they started their degree. For more information please visit Previous UNSW Online Handbooks. The program normally consists of 32 courses or 192 UOC in approved courses, to be completed over a period of 4 academic years.

These UOC need to be made up of:
  • Compulsory core courses
  • Flexible core courses
  • Major requirements
  • Minimum of 4 International Studies courses
  • 1 course in Intercultural and Cross Cultural Study
  • 2 courses in Professional and Contextual Skills
  • 2 courses in Studies of the Region (to be completed while on exchange)
  • Free electives
Compulsory core courses account for 24 UOC (4 courses)
Note: For students intending to complete a major in Actuarial Studies, MATH1151 and MATH1251 should be completed instead of ECON1203 . Please refer to Actuarial Studies outline for further information.

Flexible core courses account for 24 UOC (4 courses). Students should choose 4 courses from the following list:
Note: For students intending to complete a major in Actuarial Studies, ACTL1001 Actuarial Studies and Commerce must be completed as one of these flexible core courses. Please refer to Actuarial Studies outline for further information.

Major requirements 48UOC in an approved disciplinary stream offered by the Australian School of Business (See Table A), containing at least 18 UOC at level 3. Note that the 48UOC includes the first disciplinary course(s) in the Core (Compulsory or Flexible). This means that, for the majority of majors, students will complete 42UOC in specified disciplinary courses outside the core.)

International Studies account for a minimum of 24 UOC (4 courses). These courses are from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and may be in the areas of Asian Studies, Development Studies, European Studies, Global Studies, International Relations or Language Studies (See Table A). For full details of the approved areas and courses required for a major in International Studies, please refer to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences website.

Intercultural and Cross Cultural Study accounts for 6 UOC (1 course)
Professional and Contextual Skills accounts for 12 UOC (2 courses) which are selected from the list below
Studies of the Region accounts for 12 UOC (2 courses). These courses are part of the 48 UOC completed while undertaking the compulsory 1 year exchange at an overseas institution. This exchange, or Commerce Overseas Program (COP), may be undertaken any time after session 1 of Year 2. Approved Studies of the Region courses must contain content on the country or region of COP placement, for example, language of the region, history of the region, geography of the region, politics or business practices of the regions. Regions are Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Middle East and Oceania.

The Studies of the Region courses need to be approved by the Australian School of Business Student Centre, however they may also need to be approved by the relevant authority for International Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences if you wish to use them to count towards a major in International Studies. To proceed on the Commerce Overseas Program (COP) students must have achieved satisfactory academic progress in their first and second years of study and must fulfil the requirements of the University's Exchange Program.

Free electives account for up to 24 UOC (6 courses). The number of free electives will depend on a students' chosen major(s) Please contact the Australian School of Business Student Centre for further information.

Honours

High achieving students may apply to undertake honours in the area of their Commerce major. Honours is an additional year of full-time study which provides students with advanced knowledge of their chosen field and develops research and communication skills. Students usually complete advanced courses/seminars and a thesis. Students interested in studying at Honours Level should refer to the relevant Honours plan record for entry requirements and contact the Honours Co-ordinator in the relevant School.
