The University offers a four year combined program leading to the award of the degrees of Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Economics (BCom/BEc).

This combined degree program will appeal to students wanting a strong, broad and highly regarded business course to complement a program of in depth study in economics to a professional level. Students will complete a major stream in both a selected areas of Commerce and study in the professional discipline of Economics. With approval, students with an appropriate academic record may also enrol in an additional Honours year in the relevant Honours degree program offered in either the Commerce or Economics component of the combined degree.

Studies leading to the award of the Bachelor of Commerce/ Bachelor of Economics degree normally consist of 192 units of credit (UOC) (32 courses) to be completed over a period of four academic years.

Students in this program must complete 12 units of credit in General Education courses or their equivalent (unless otherwise entitled to exemption). For further information about General Education Requirements please refer to the Online Handbook.

Please note that students enrolled in programs within the Australian School of Business cannot take General Education courses offered by the Business School. These restrictions also apply to the following courses:

Rules relating to the award of the degree of Bachelor of Commerce or to the award of the Bachelor of Economics shall apply wherever relevant to students enrolled in the combined Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Economics with the exceptions of Rule 9 – Academic Program Requirements below.

Students are advised to consult the Academic Rules relating to the Bachelor of Commerce program (3502) and the Bachelor of Economics program (3543) for further information.

Rule 9 - Academic Program Requirements – BCom / BEc (3543)
To complete the requirements for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Economics:

9.1 For the Pass degree, a student must complete and pass 192 units of credit, which shall include:

9.1.1 36 UOC of Level 1 core courses ,

9.1.2
(a) satisfactory completion of a minimum of 12 units of credit in General Education courses or their equivalent (unless otherwise entitled to exemption). Combined undergraduate degrees offered with other faculties and leading to the award of two degrees satisfy this requirement (12 UOC in General Education) within the program.

(b) undertake an additional 56 hours of study which examines the purposes and consequences of their university education and which fosters socially, ethically and professionally responsible behaviour. The Bachelor of Commerce fulfils this requirement as part of the normal program curriculum.

9.1.3 At least 72 units of credit from the courses offered by the School of Economics (or approved quantitative substitutions) in the Australian School of Business and at least 84 UOC from courses offered by other schools within the Business School. The combined program can be structured as follows:
(a) either a double major in Commerce and a single major in Economics; or
(b) a single major in Commerce with 1 minor and more electives and single major in Economics

9.1.4 The remaining Business course or credit requirements not required for a major sequence and not Year 1 core courses, as prescribed, if any, may be chosen from any other courses offered by the Australian School of Business.

9.1.5 A student may have only a maximum of three majors recognised in this combined degree program.

9.2 Unless in exceptional circumstances the maximum number of Level One courses a student may count towards their program requirements are capped at 72 units of credit.

9.2.1 A student cannot count a mainstream course offered by faculties other than the Australian School of Business both as a substitute for a Business elective and as a substitute for a General Education elective
