Plan Outline

This plan is only available to students commencing from 2009

Students are advised to consult the German Studies staff to plan their entry point in the language sequence.

Aims of the minor
  • To develop informed understanding of human experience, human culture and human society in relation to German Studies.
  • To teach the tools and methods of understanding associated with German Studies, and to encourage students to perceive the relationship between German Studies and other Humanities and Social Science disciplines.
  • To encourage the breadth of vision and critical thinking associated with interdisciplinary scholarship and research related to German Studies.
  • To enable students to place contemporary German language, society and culture in a historical and comparative context.
  • To engage critically with fundamental questions about value in German Studies in both ethical and aesthetical contexts.
  • To develop the skills of critical, creative and imaginative thinking about German language, society, culture and the arts.
  • To promote the techniques and value of reasoned and open-minded discussion and debate.
  • To foster understanding of the experiences and world-views of other times, other places, and other cultures from a German perspective.

Plan Structure

For a minor sequence in German Studies students must complete 36 units of credit in an approved sequence of courses commencing at Introductory or Intermediate levels, plus 9 units of credit in EDST methodology courses in the second teaching area.

Approved European Studies Course, eg.

And
12 UOC from approved European Studies courses, e.g.

Placement Information

Students who wish to enrol in a language course without completing the necessary prerequisites are required to complete an online placement application form before the commencement of the semester.

For students admitted in their first year of study to ARTS2510 or higher on the grounds of ability and/or previous study, such courses will be counted as Level 1 courses in terms of degree requirements.
