Plan Outline

The Mechanical Engineering plan provides a versatile, comprehensive coverage of areas involving the conception and design of machinery and mechanical plant, the supervision of its construction, operation and maintenance, the planning and supervision of large engineering projects, and general engineering management. Due to its wide range, a number of options are provided as Technical Elective courses in the final year. These are preferentially linked to provide a direction appropriate to the needs of Australian industry and to the specific interests of students, although some flexibility is available if required. Typical fields which may be encompassed by the program include building services, computer-aided design, power generation, energy and environmental systems, gas and liquid handling, bio-mechanics, materials handling, control systems and transport. An emphasis is placed on the application of engineering science, development and management in these fields.

Note:
  • The first program structures listed (Years 1 - 4) are under the new flexible structure for students who commenced in 2006 and onwards.
  • The program structure for students who enrolled prior to 2006 (Year 4) is listed after flexible structure.

Suggested Year 1 electives for this program are:
  1. COMP1911 is recommended for the MECH Plan.
  2. MINE1300 and CVEN1300 are acceptable alternatives for MMAN1300
  3. Not all courses are offered in both sessions but students should complete 24 UOC in each session.

  • Plus 2 Professional electives 6 UOC each (Total 12 UOC)
Mechanical Engineering Professional Electives

12 units of credit of Professional Elective courses are required. They may be selected from the technical elective list of courses of the School or from Years 3 and 4 courses from other plans run by the School. Prerequisite and corequisite requirements must be satisfied.

Approval is required for the selection of any course from outside the School.

Due to staff availability and to demand, it is likely that not all of the Professional Electives will be always on offer. Students are advised in November which Professional Electives will be offered in the following year.

Mechanical Engineering Technical Electives

Twenty-four units of credit of Technical Elective courses are required. They may be selected from the technical elective list of courses of the School or from Years 3 and 4 courses from other programs run by the School. Pre- and co requisite requirements must be satisfied.
Approval is required for the selection of any course from outside the School.
Due to staff availability and to demand, it is likely that not all of the Technical Electives will be always on offer. Students are advised in November which Technical electives will be offered in the following year.
