Description

This course will explore the history and the theory of selected art practices that are produced beyond the borders of the orthodox modern and postmodern canon. It will address the art made by the classic institutionalised ‘outsiders’ and ‘brut’ artists, as well that made for mediumistic, folkloric and counter cultural audiences. The theoretical underpinnings of the ‘outsider’ industry, and the proclamations of its principal advocates will be subjected to scrutiny. The course will also attend to the moments of intersection between ‘outsider’ and ‘insider’ philosophies and practices.
