Description

This screenings course surveys theories and practices of avant-garde cinema of the first half of the Twentieth Century. It will include historical and theoretical examination of Abstract Cinema, Dada and Surrealist film, Soviet Montage Cinema, German Expressionism, French Impressionist film, avant-garde documentary film, and U.S. avant-garde film of the 1950s. The course will give students basic knowledge in the early history of avant-garde cinema, framed by a selection of key film theories.
