Description

Basic properties of soils and soil mechanics; Classification of soils; seepage of water through soils; shear strengths, settlement of foundations, stability of slopes and embankments, earth pressures and simple design of retaining walls; site investigation, sampling and in-situ testing of subgrades. Scope and applications of hydrology; hydrologic measurements, rainfall analysis, storm rainfall-runoff relations, flood estimation, surface and groundwater sources, urban drainage concepts. Basic concepts of hydraulics: Fluid properties, hydrostatics, motion of fluids, closed conduit (pipe) flow, open channel flow, urban development/subdivision layouts with consideration to water supply distribution, wastewater collection and stormwater drainage.
