Description Provides an introduction to the history of the Spanish empire in the Americas from the sixteenth century to the early nineteenth century. The major trends, events and processes of the colonial era are examined, up to and including the wars of independence in the early nineteenth century. The colonial history of Brazil is also covered. Apart from a comparison of Portuguese and Spanish America, an attempt will be made to compare the rise and decline of the Spanish and Portuguese empires with the vicissitudes of English colonialism in the Americas.
