Description

This course provides students with an understanding of film as a technological medium through an exploration of its basic means and features: the recorded or captured image (both analogue and digital), the image's animation or movement, and the audiovisual relationship. By exploring these concepts through practical exercises and through case studies of specific film practices, students will gain an understanding of the technical, aesthetic, and sensory workings and potential of audio-visual media. The course prioritises practice-based learning as a valuable means of developing students's understandings of key concepts in the discipline and as a key means for enhancing students skills in creative thinking. Students will develop a basic understanding of how the film medium has been explored in a range of experiemental film and video practices, and in so doing will develop an understanding of the creative potential of the medium. These knowledges will be drawn on and developed in the creative work students will produce in the course.
