Linguistics

Description

Linguistics is the scientific study of language, its structure and functions.

Linguistics provides you with a basis for a variety of practical applications, including the teaching and learning of foreign languages, translating and interpreting, facilitating inter-cultural communication, diagnosing and treating language disorders, developing language curricula in schools and improving literacy skills.

The UNSW Master of Applied Linguistics is designed for those with a deep interest in the workings of language. It is a professionally relevant degree for students intrigued by the complex relationship between structural and functional elements of language, and its social, cognitive and cultural manifestations. Current and aspiring language professionals will develop specialist knowledge guided by contemporary applied linguistics theory and practice, and by vocational demands and their own professional ambitions.

Sharpening your analytical and expressive skills, you will be trained to excel in professions such as academic and educational publishing, public discourse analysis, linguistic aspects of information technology, and government and private language education institutions.

LINKING THEORY TO PRACTICE

At UNSW we link theory with applied practice. Our degree is firmly grounded in the disciplinary study of linguistics, making it unique amongst many other applied linguistics programs offered in Australia. Our students learn to examine the contemporary theories that underpin applied linguistics for a deeper, more enriched understanding of language. Student presentations, proposals, interactions, design and evaluation of language related tests, diagnosis of language problems, and focused research projects are all part of your vocational preparation as an applied linguistics professional.
