Stream Outline

The stream is designed for students who are completing the Masters of Biomedical Engineering program as a single-award program.

Stream Structure

The stream is very flexible and students from different backgrounds may undertake introductory courses to broaden their knowledge of either biomedical or physical sciences. Candidates must complete a program totalling 72 units of credit, 48 of which must be at postgraduate level and a minimum of 48 units must be from the courses listed below.

The core biomedical engineering content may be selected from the following options:

Notes:
  1. For students with an engineering or physical sciences background ANAT2511 Fundamentals of Anatomy, PHSL2121 Principles of Physiology 1A and PHSL2221 Principles of Physiology 1B are highly recommended.
  2. The BIOM9914 Masters Project is offered, subject to school approval, and is usually taken in the final semester.

Stream Requirements

To complete the stream a student must pass a total of 72 UoC of courses comprising:
  • At least 48 UoC selected from the courses listed above.
  • At most 24 UoC selected from other relevant postgraduate or undergraduate courses. These might include:
  • Courses from the Faculty of Engineering technical management courses (GSOE9xxx).
  • For all non BIOM9xxx courses, written approval must be obtained from GSBME prior to enrolling.
  • Students may undertake a 12 UoC masters research project (BIOM9914) with school approval.

Entry Requirements

To enter a student must have one of these qualifications:
  • A 4-year Bachelor of Engineering degree with honours (WAM >= 65) or
  • A 4-year Bachelors degree in a biomedical health-related discipline* with honours (either embedded or as a single honours year) (WAM >= 65) and 2 semesters of first-year university level mathematics or equivalent.
  • A graduate diploma in biomedical engineering, such as 5449 Engineering (Biomedical Eng) offered by the GSBmE or the equivalent with a WAM >= 65.
Examples include medicine, allied health sciences, biomedical services, veterinary science.
